Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital was established in 1963 as Ayub Hospital to provide outpatient services. It was also equipped to provide Pathological and Radiological supports. Later on, the hospital extended its service to cater to inpatients with five beds and subsequently with 25 beds. After independence in 1971, the hospital was renamed Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital. Since then, the hospital was gradually developed into a general hospital to extend services serve as a central referral center in Bangladesh, especially for the northern and western part of Bangladesh. Today, Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital is an 850-bedded tertiary level hospital with modern medical facilities including thirty-five departments.
