Every year on the first Sunday of June, Cancer Survivors Day is observed to celebrate the successful medical history of cancer patients, who have gone through the critical periods of such a dreadful disease, and yet managed to overcome and live; individuals who have just been diagnosed with cancer, along with the contributions of caregivers and supporters all through the journey. It was first observed on 5 June 1988; on 5 June 2022, the 35th National Cancer Survivors Day was celebrated worldwide. The Foundation has defined cancer survivors as any individual living with a history of cancer. Anyone who is just diagnosed with cancer, has been in remission for 20 years or more, currently in active treatment for cancer, have been living with cancer or an adult who used to have cancer as a child; in all these situations, an individual will be known as a cancer survivor.
The day is themed as the “Celebration of Life”, where life after cancer and life with cancer of cancer survivors, caregivers, medical professionals and specialists, researchers, community of supporters and even families of the patients are all celebrated for their strong willpower as well as mental strength to deal with the most crucial periods of life. Even though it is widely celebrated in the United States, the day has been observed in other countries as well. The journey with cancer never really ends, it turns into a lifelong process of facing and overcoming challenges. This is why every individual connected or affected with cancer is included when the day of the celebration arrives. The Foundation tries to bring meaning and colors to each of their lives by arranging discussion sessions to create a platform for the survivors to share their experiences and stories, therapy sessions to boost their confidence and spirit, virtual meetings, and many more thoughtful initiatives.
The main objective is to enhance their quality of life, regardless of how long they will live by raising effective awareness for cancer survivors. Fighting cancer is difficult, and the whole journey is complicated. Yet, it is a responsibility for everyone, no matter if they have acquaintance with any cancer patient or not, to support the survivors, assuring them that they are inspirational for others.
