NASA is on a mission to reveal the mysteries of cancer by utilizing the unique conditions of space. They aim to observe how space affects cancer cells and develop innovative treatments. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Every year our family members or community people are affected by cancer and we mourn the loss. On March 21, 2024, during an event at NASA Headquarters in Washington, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra highlighted the progress their agencies are making in space and on Earth for President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden’s Cancer Moonshot initiative. Nelson stated, “We go to space not just to explore the stars, but to improve life here on Earth. In that microgravity environment, NASA is studying cancer growth—and the effect of cancer treatments— much faster than we can on Earth.” The main goal of this project is to find new ways to fight cancer by studying how cancer cells behave in a weightless environment. Researchers believe that observing cancer cells in a gravity-free environment could aid in developing more effective therapies. NASA is sending cancer cells to the International Space Station to study their growth and response to drugs. This research can potentially open up new paths to the fight against cancer.
